Balancing Acts: Mental Health, Work-Life Harmony, and Creating in Chaos

Ever felt like you’re living two lives at once?

Maybe you have a full-time job that pays the bills and a creative passion that feeds your soul. Or maybe you’re a parent, a caregiver, or a C-suite leader—and somehow, you’re also trying to “carve out” time to create.

If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

When I worked as a travel nurse, I lived this double life every day. Each assignment brought new challenges—being thrown into unfamiliar units, working with coworkers who didn’t want me there, and constantly navigating the unknown.

The stress was unrelenting, and by the end of my traveling career, I was completely burned out.

It wasn’t until I took a step back that I realized the truth: Balance isn’t about doing everything. It’s about doing what matters most.

And without prioritizing “mental health”, none of it works.

If you’re juggling roles and feeling stretched too thin, this is for you.

Let’s talk about how to protect your mental health, build a strong support system, and find space for what fuels you—even when life feels chaotic.

Mental Health: Your Foundation for Everything

Here’s the thing: You can’t show up for work, your creative projects, or your loved ones if your mental health is in the gutter. It’s not selfish to prioritize yourself—it’s essential.

When I was juggling travel nursing and life’s endless demands, I ignored my mental health.

Anxiety? I pushed through.

Exhaustion? I told myself it was normal.

Spoiler: It wasn’t.

Learning to listen to my mental health was the biggest game-changer.

  • Out-of-the-Box Solution: “Energy Mapping”

Stop managing your time and “start managing your energy”.

For one week, track when you feel focused, drained, or creative.

Use your peak energy times for deep work or creative projects, and save low-energy tasks (emails, chores) for when you’re running on fumes.

  • Anchor Yourself with Small Rituals

A few minutes of intentional practice can ground your entire day.

Start with deep breathing, journaling, or even stretching in the morning.

End your day with gratitude or a calming routine before bed.

Set a “mindfulness alarm” on your phone to remind you to pause, breathe, and check in with yourself during the day.

Redefining Balance: Forget Perfect, Aim for Aligned

Work-life balance doesn’t mean giving everything equal time. Life just doesn’t work that way.

Real balance is about aligning your time and energy with your top priorities—and letting go of the rest.

When I started focusing on alignment, I asked myself one simple question each week: What’s the most important thing right now?

By narrowing my focus, I gave myself permission to “let go” of the things that didn’t truly matter.

  • Micro-Prioritizing

Each week, choose three core goals: one for work, one for personal life, and one for your creative passion.

Everything else? It can wait.

  • Out-of-the-Box Solution: “Themed Days”

Assign a focus to each day.

For example, Monday could be your “admin day,” Tuesday your “deep creative work day,” and Wednesday your “self-care day.” Structuring your time this way reduces decision fatigue and keeps you moving forward.
