Powerful message, Kathleen! I came to Substack to not only connect with great writers like you, but also writing is therapeutic. I've found myself healing through reading others experiences and it's been amazing.
So, thank you Kathleen for being bold and genuine. I appreciate you! ๐๐ผ
I'm so glad you came to substack as well. I know we've made some good connections here and I agree writing is very therapeutic. I never really wrote before so I didn't really know but it definitely is healing.
you are a fantastic writer and I appreciate you . I will always stay bold and genuine. It's just my nature.. thank you for taking the time to read the article and comment means the world. Again, happy Father's Day, my friend! ๐ค๐
So far Substack has been the only place kind enough to help me promote my message in a more authentic way without having to play "popularity games" like most other platforms.
I've already spent a lot of time and effort building in 2 other platforms just to realize that most of it now falls flat.
Substack is the *only* place online where sharing and connecting with others can happen in a more "human" way and I'm grateful that for the first time, an algorithm is not throwing my content into a void.
Still, if the whole platform changes for the worse, I'll move on to the next one that appears because my mission continues until I'm done or have no more breath.
Juan, I feel the same way about the last thing that you said if it changes I would move on and that wasn't really the reason for me writing this post that came up because there is a lot of frustration out there so people have to make a decision they have to decide why they're here. It's our WHY that matters the most and then it really doesn't matter what the heck anybody thinks ๐ We do what we do because we love it and if those who don't like it, don't have to read it. They don't have to subscribe they don't have to follow. And of course there's always gonna be unkind people doesn't matter where you go. It's part of life unfortunately. But acid is said in many different ways whether it's what goes around comes around, the boomerang effect, we reap what we sow or people talk about karma. It's all the same thing. So what we put out will come back to us one way or the other so why not put out positive things? I love your perspective and I appreciate your insight. Thank you so much for reading and commenting and for what you do here on substack. It doesn't make a difference! ๐ค๐๐ฏ
Juan it 100% makes a difference! I think of self talk that we have with ourselves sometimes, and if we look at the times that we're not being positive in our self talk and look at how we feel in our body posture and just how it affects not only us with the people around us and then compare that with the opposite, which is the positive talk it's very evident
Patience is an underrated virtue, and compassion is poison. I made a decision to stay with Substack to write a weekly newsletter for 4 years, and publish 2 books.
I worked at a top tier investment fund in Australia for 4 years right after university. And one of key lessons I learned from my boss was to stay low but keep going during tough times.
I ran ultra marathons for 6 years and one of my realisations are at least 1/3 people quit before finish line.
Fang, I appreciate your insight as always, but the thing is you weren't doing something you didn't wanna. Do you enjoyed it now were there hard times of course but you push through and that's what you do when you love what you're doing, but if you don't love what you're doing then people need to find something else to do. I wasn't writing this for myself. I'm not going anywhere. There's a reason I came here and I'm certainly not even close to where I'm going to be and I'm starting a second publication probably in July or August because I'm taking my time with it and it's gonna blow everything out of the water. I believe in it and people need it and it's something I love to do so I'll take the time I'll put the effort in. I'll cry. I'll sweat I'll shed blood OK because it's something I want to do, but there's people that I don't know maybe they put all their eggs in a basket and that basket leaks or brakes and then there's no eggs so you have to have more than one thing that you're doing and obviously if someone has and I've always said this because people have asked in different interviews you know what makes a person successful on substack or what they call successful which they base it on likes and comments and subscribers, which is crap to me. Did you change your person's life? Did you change a person's perspective of the way they think about themselves maybe they were gonna harm themselves I mean, that's how I rate success- was I able to help one person today?
of course we have personal goals as well, but I don't go by statistics. It's like I said in an earlier comment I'm almost at 1900 people wanna leave because they're not committed to what I'm doing and it's all about our WHY, it is the most important thing. And if we get that right then everything else falls into place and we'll do whatever it takes will be in 100% now some people they're 100% they can give because they're working and they have kids and all that may be an hour day. cool!!!! then be all in for that one hour. And I know I'm preaching to the choir here as they say, but you get it. I get it. The statistics show that most people quit after the 16th article that's what I was told by someone that's been on that for a long time and has done analytics. There's gonna be times in each and every one of our lives. If something's gonna happen a family member is gonna get ill or someone becomes disabled or there's trauma that's this is just life and maybe someone does need to take a break and that's cool man that's OK. Family comes first! but it doesn't mean they can't come back or you know with Mom I can at least post one note today sometimes I'll post three notes in the morning because I have no idea what's gonna happen that day we'll have a good day with her cancer and then we won't and we're only like three weeks in right now and and you know the radiation can last up to eight weeks so it is what it is.
One day at a time !!! sometimes it may be one hour at a time, but whatever it takes.
You know I'm a fighter and I'm a warrior and I'm not quitting. I've never quit on anything if I left something it wasn't because I quit. It was because of either no longer interested me or I found something better. That's how I roll.
But again, I'll just reiterate I'd rather have 100 true fans. It's 100 people that don't believe in me and they want to invest their money to get what I can offer them and that's it and it will just be 100 and I'm OK with that I mean it could be 200 but it doesn't have to be this astronomical number. you know money can only buy so much and it comes and goes and during the Great Depression they used to burn money to keep warm, so I don't look at money the way, probably most people do because there was a time I couldn't rub two pennies together when I lost everything my business my two-story house, my three cars, my partner, friends -everything! And it was my fault it was my own doing and I was 27 years old. And someone believed in me enough to help pick me up and I started over. I know what it's like to be wealthy. I know what it's like to lose everything and now I know what it's like to be in the middle. I still don't count on anything and I'm grateful for every time I fill up my car with gas or pay a bill because you never know. Anyway, I did didn't mean to give you a dissertation because I know we probably come from the same thought about these things, at least I think we do, but it needs to be said.
Bless you, my fellow warrior ๐๐ฅ๐ฅโ๏ธ๐ฅฐ
This one's a powerhouse, Kathleen. As always, I appreciate your no-fluff approach to writing, but this post is also tender and nuanced in places... as if you know this one is going to take some strength and resolve to analyze our "why." For me, I do that frequently, but the piece I haven't factored in was the algorithm. At any rate, thank you for this particular article โ I feel a re-read or two, maybe more, on this, and a definite restack. You know I get you, see you, and appreciate what you're doing.
thank you, Cindy. I really appreciate it ๐ค yeah, when I came here, I heard the algorithm wasn't like that or that there was no algorithm, but obviously there has to be an algorithm. I'm not an idiot, but it does tend to go for the bigger account that doesn't tend to it definitely does there's no debating that and they need to stop pushing it. I'm not going anywhere, but I know a lot of people are frustrated and I have no problem talking about it.
The gang that came from medium and other such platforms that support each other and keep going up up up well those of us that didn't do that or maybe did come from other platforms, but do not want to be included in that he just start supporting each other . I have found that I'm getting all kinds of stuff in my feeds that I never signed up for so I'm having to go in and hit hide note I don't really wanna block the people but substack needs to stop it. It's ridiculous. I wanna read the people that I'm either following her subscribe to especially the people that I'm paying to subscribe to.
By the way, I think what you're doing is totally awesome and I know you'll get back to it as you're healing and if you need anything, you know what I'm speaking of you can DM me and I can help with any of your surg recovery ๐ฅฐ๐
This has been a hard go the last couple of months. We look around and see all of these fabulous big accounts with so many likes, and all the small ones are getting pushed aside it seems. When a game is rigged, just being yourself doesnโt seem like enough. And no one can accuse me of not being myself!
The problem is making a Substack that everyone wants to read and share is easier than being real. Inconvenient truths are a hard sell. Pain points are probably a better angle. Stories about suffering always seem to fly off the shelves. I donโt really know what direction to go with things. Stagnation is worse than uncomfortable.
But in the end running from this problem is also losing. Hard to remember that growth at the roots is invisible, and digging up the plant definitely stops progress, maybe even kills it!
Tim, I love your analogy because I grow food and herbs, plants and everything you're right if it comes up by the roots that isn't growing at all
I think the thing is to do what we love best and we will attract the right people and if someone's doing this to make money here, I wouldn't say this would be the place to do it unless you're just doing programs or digital products but still may be a place to get emails and use it in a different way and of course not putting all our eggs in this basket because when the basket breaks or it has a leak or something there are no eggs. And you are definitely yourself just like I am and if people don't like it, they don't have to read it. They can unsubscribe you know and this is just being honest and if people get pissed off they get pissed off. That's their problem, right? I've always said I would take 100 true fans and true fans or people that invest right so they would all be paid subscribers and that's all I had and that's all I ever had and I would be fine with that so the other 900 could go away do you know what I'm saying are they really true fans? Do they really believe in what I'm doing or what you're doing and if they do and I know we can't subscribe to everybody and pay everybody because money is tight no matter where you go and inflation is no joke.
But I will tell you what I've decided a lot of people that I've joined to you know learn how to grow on substack or write better and all that....listen, I'm not a writer! I've never claimed to be my grandmother was a published writer, but I have a lot of information that can help people, just like we all do we have our unique spin on things eh? Thought I'd throw that in there (eh?) maybe to get you smiling. My background is Scottish Irish English Welch German.
OK, I got a subject, won't be the first time ๐ so a lot of these people that I subscribed to initially you know won't be renewing why because I figured out through some of their help not all what works and what doesn't as far as you know just getting started on substack. There is no secret. There is no one way to do it. Most of these people have brought over people from medium and or other platforms and they're the same people they're called, "the ... gang"- this is what I've been told. And these people are well known and like I said I'm not gonna say any names at all because people know who they are and they know who they are and they they're gonna stick together and they're gonna push each other and that's what they do. It's this way in life as we know. Nothing is fair. My mom told me that when I was a little girl I don't like to accept it, but it's the truth.
So now as I start subscribing, my year will be at the end of June. I'm gonna subscribe to people and pay money to people that I get something from that I believe in that are like-minded. I don't need any boot camps on notes or how to ride or any of that stuff. not because I'm not the best at it but because I don't need it because what what makes us unique that's our edge and we just need to get it out there and use other platforms maybe to bring people here to get people to the other platforms and I know it'll work what you do is amazing and awesome and I plan on subscribing but I spent thousands of dollars last over the last year and a lot of them I'm not renewing because I don't need what I offer anymore. Does that make sense? Didn't mean to make this lengthy, but this is how we communicate on substack so... again love what you do Tim and whenever I get to come to Canada, I hope to meet a bunch of Canadians there. I'm so excited about it. And please I like to let everybody know because people think we're from America. We agree with what's going on now. I 100% disagree with what's going on and if I didn't live in Florida and have have to take care of my mom and my stepfather, I would probably sell everything and move to another country. This is the only state I will live in in Florida and I have to be here right now. I don't agree with what's going on. It's embarrassing, but I didn't vote for it. I didn't vote at all because I don't like either party so that's my vote. people say vote for the lesser of two evils really I'm not voting for any of them anyway didn't mean to get political. Sorry about that but yeah, I would love to meet you and your wife and you know just go through Canada. I've got some friends from long ago that were snowbirds that are up there, and it would be great to come to your country ๐ฏโผ๏ธ๐
Anytime youโre up here Iโd be glad to meet you too, thanks for this long reply. Believe it or not, this helps my mood quite a bit! Just gonna keep doing what I do and I know youโll do the same.

Iโm here for multiple reasons. As a retired teacher part of me hopes to โteachโ but itโs much more than that. I am fulfilling a need to create, express, learn, grow, and be heard and if others benefit from what I write, mission accomplished.

Yeah you hit the nail in the head both with this comment and the original post.
If people want to leave the platform or unsubscribe or whatever else, they can just do it. We'll keep moving forward either way. ๐
Also love the approach of putting out positive energy out in the world because it does make a difference. ๐
